Science Media Group SMG at Work

 In Production

The Science Media Group has been commissioned to produce the following programs, now in production:

Physics for the 21st Century

Create an online physics course including text, videos, and interactive simulations for high school physics teachers and general public (non-science major college graduates). Funded by Annenberg Media.

Science and Engineering in the Lives of Students

In partnership with Oregon State University, create a professional development course for middle and high school teachers to show how to teach math and science using problems in construction, e.g., thermodynamics, tension, electricity. Funded by NSF.

Understandings of Consequence (UCP) Project

In partnership with Tina Grotzer of HGSE and Project Zero, create online professional development tutorials for elementary teachers that accompany 2 UCP classroom modules. Funded by NSF.

Massive Star Formation

In partnership with Liz Humphreys and Lincoln Greenhill, create a website for teenagers ("Astronomy Detectives") that uses the KaLYPSO project’s work creating a multi-epoch movie of Orion Source I to teach about the nature of science. Funded by NSF.

Welcome to Smithsonian

Create student and teacher orientation videos for various SI units and Centers (SAPAP, SLC, NASM, UHC, SAAM, NMAH, REN, NPG, NZP, STRI, and ACM). Funded by SI School Programming Funds.

CCSSO/Virtual Learning Magnet Pilot

Working with NASM, create short video pieces to be incorporated into a pre-college online physics course based on collections, exhibits and research at the Smithsonian Institution.

Harvard Museum of Natural History "Evolution"

Create videos about the history of evolution research at Harvard and interactives that teach the principles of natural selection and phylogeny for a public exhibit on evolution opening in April 2009 at the Harvard Museum of Natural History. Funded by HMNH.

Community Science Learning Through Youth Astronomy Apprenticeships

In partnership with SED and MIT, provide for organizations interested in replicating the program, video documentation of after school programs that use MicroObservatory for astronomy learning. Funded by NSF.

CfA Public Night Webcasts

Provide live, three-camera podcasts of CfA Monthly Observatory Nights, then edit and archive these for web distribution. Funded by Public Affairs.

Institute for Theoretical Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics

Digitize, edit, and upload ITAMP Workshop Video Proceedings for web distribution. Funded by ITAMP.

Encyclopedia of Life

Create a website for teaching higher education faculty how to use EOL as a project for undergraduate biology courses. Funded by EOL/Harvard.

Center for Tropical Forest Studies Overview Video

Produce a 10 minute video documenting work at CTFS forest sites and its importance in climate change and biodiversity studies. Funded by STRI (in negotiation).

Visions of the Universe

(Libraries as a Pathway to Inspiring, Engaging & Education) As part of the International Year of Astronomy, SMG is creating podcasts of astronomers who are available as guest speakers to public libraries. Partners include the STScI and American Library Association. Funded by NASA.

Black Holes: Space Warps & Time Twists

Contribute photography and multimedia to the "Black Holes: Space Warps & Time Twists" exhibit to open in June, 2009 at the Boston Museum of Science. Also create a web-based tutorial on how the exhibit was developed for ASTC professional development. Funded by NASA and NSF.

FICSS/Math

Provide video editing, subtitling, and multimedia support for FICSS/Math. Funded by NSF.
